Sleepers of the Week: Week 10

Posted: November 12, 2009

Week 10.  The final bye week of the 2009 season.  Next week starts the stretch run toward the fantasy football playoffs.  Here are the Sleepers for Week 10 who could help keep you in contention:

QUARTERBACK

Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) vs. JacksonvilleProjection: 17-31, 210 yards, 2 TDmark-sanchez
I’ve spotlighted Sanchez in the past, and he’s tended to let me down, but this week, against a 26th ranked Jags’ pass D, I have a hunch Mr. GQ is due.  He won’t singlehandedly win you the week, but he’s a viable fill-in for Schaub or Eli Manning.

Chad Henne (Miami) vs. Tampa BayProjection: 16-26, 195 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int
Henne has a good match-up against a Bucs‘ defense that has given up the 3rd most touchdowns in the league to opposing passers (18), but have also snatched 11 picks.

RUNNING BACK

Jamaal Charles (Kansas City) @ OaklandProjection: 12-62 rushing, 4-22 receiving, 1 TDJamaal Charles
The Raiders27th ranked Swiss cheese defense surrenders 161 ypg to opposing rushers, and has given up a league high 13 rushing touchdowns.  Charles could explode on any play, and should have a big day, despite sharing touches with Kolby Smith.

Mike Bell (New Orleans) @ St. LouisProjection: 12-52 rushing, 1 TD
The Saints‘ RB1 is Pierre Thomas, and he’s a top-notch RB2 in the fantasy world.  It’s the match-up that dictates this pick, as the Saints will likely be up big early, and in second half garbage time, Bell could come in for clean-up duty.

Ladell Betts (Washington) vs. DenverProjection: 17-59 rushing, 2-19 receiving
For the record, I hate this pick.  Betts is old, has a mild ankle sprain, averages 3.5 ypc over the past 3 years, has scored 1 TD in each of those seasons and already has his 1 for ’09.  Still, he could see 20 touches against a tough Broncos defense.

WIDE RECEIVER

Earl Bennett (Chicago) @ San FranciscoProjection: 4-56 receiving, 1 TDEarl Bennett Dive
Coming off his best game of the year (11 targets, 7 catches, 93 yards), Bennett is finally showing signs of why he was considered a preseason sleeper darling.  He’s still looking for his first score, and I’m betting it’s in this week’s Thursday night special.

Andre Caldwell (Cincinnati) @ PittsburghProjection: 4-45 receiving, 1 TD
With Chris Henry’s season-ending injury, Caldwell’s targets should increase slightly, and his reception totals should go up accordingly.  He has 3 scores on the season; 2 against Baltimore, the other against the Steelers.

Mike Wallace (Pittsburgh) vs. CincinnatiProjection: 3-55 receiving
I don’t know why Wallace is owned in less than 50% of Yahoo! Public Leagues and fewer than 20% of ESPN leagues, especially after his Monday night performance.  He’s a lock for at least 50 yards, and could score for the 3rd straight week.

TIGHT END

Brandon Pettigrew (Detroit) @ MinnesotaProjection: 6-72 receiving
The Vikings will be hanging all over whichever Lions QB starts (Matthew Stafford or Daunte Culpepper), and Pettigrew is sure to see several dump-offs.  One of those could result in a TD, if the Lions get that deep into Viking territory.

KICKER

Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland) vs. Kansas CityProjection: 2 FG, 2 PAT (1 FG 40+)
This is a battle of two terrible defenses and two lowly offenses.  The winner?  Both teams’ kickers, who could put up very similar lines.  I’ll take my chances on Janikowski (for leagues that give bonuses for long distance kicks).

DEFENSE

Tennessee Titans vs. BuffaloProjection: 17 points allowed, 3 sacks, 2 Int
The entire Tennessee team has newfound life since their bye and the insertion of Vince Young into the starting lineup.  Their defense isn’t as bad as the rankings would suggest (32nd pass, 18th rush), and Buffalo’s offense is plain dismal.

Week 5 Sleeper Results: “Collie” Card

Austin Collie

Posted: October 14, 2009

Ah, Costa Del Sol.  The South of Spain…  Not a bad life.  And 5-10 with a push in a week where I was on a European vacation ain’t too shabby, either.  I’m now in London, where my computer access is slightly better, though my ability to catch even one episode of NFL Live is nil.  Still, the show must go on, so here are the Sleeper results for Week 5:

QUARTERBACK (1 for 2)

Matt Cassel – Got it going, as expected, despite falling a TD shy of the projection.
Projected: 19-32, 265 yards, 3 TD, 20 rushing yards
Actual: 23-41, 253 yards, 2 TD, 28 rushing yards

Mark Sanchez – Sanchez wasn’t efficient (50% completion percentage), and fell well short of expectations.
Projected: 18-28, 215 yards, 2 TD
Actual: 12-24, 172 yards, 1 TD

RUNNING BACK (1 for 3)

Jerome HarrisonJamal Lewis took back the workload, and Harrison got bottled up when he got his touches.
Projected: 13-60 rushing, 4-22 receiving, 1 TD
Actual: 8-21 rushing, 0 TD

Jonathan Stewart – Projection had him at 12.9 points, came in at 10.5.  Not quite, but useful.
Projected: 12-55 rushing, 2-14 receiving, 1 TD
Actual: 10-39 rushing, 1-6 receiving, 1 TD

Beanie Wells – It always seems like next week’s the week with this guy.  Now his coach is even saying so.
Projected: 8-50 rushing, 1-8 receiving, 1 TD
Actual: 7-24 rushing, 0 TD

WIDE RECEIVER (1 for 2, 1 push)

Andre Caldwell – Fell a few yards shy of projection, but still found paydirt.  Push.
Projected: 6-65, 1 TD
Actual: 2-33, 1 TD

Bobby Wade – Cassel spread the ball too much for any of his receivers, sans Bowe, to be a fantasy factor.
Projected: 5-60, 1 TD
Actual: 4-42, 0 TD

Austin Collie – Like I said, Garcon got the love, but Collie is getting the job done.
Projected: 5-55, 1 TD
Actual: 8-97, 2 TD

TIGHT END (0 for 1)

Sean Ryan – See Bobby Wade.
Projected: 4-42, 1 TD
Actual: 2-27, 0 TD

KICKER (1 for 1)

Olindo Mare – Same amount of points as projected, just in a different manner.
Projected: 3-3 FG, 2 PAT (1 FG 40+)
Actual: 2-2 FG, 5 PAT (1 FG 40+)

DEFENSE (1 for 1)

Carolina Panthers – Though Clinton Portis scored twice, the Panthers shut the Redskins down most of the day.
Projected: 13 points allowed, 2 sacks, 1 Int, 2 fumble recoveries
Actual: 17 points allowed, 5 sacks, 0 Int, 1 fumble recovery

Scorecard for Week 5: 5 for 10, 1 push
Overall Scorecard for 2009 Season: 23 for 52, 3 pushes (44%)

End of the Season Sleepers

Posted: September 11, 2009

September (and early October) is when a fantasy baseball crown is earned.  5 months of day-to-day team operation, moving players in-and-out of the lineup, playing hunches for match-ups and watching your caps on innings and position maximums all comes down to the final few weeks.  That All-Star who helped you so much in the first half hasn’t done anything since June, and that unsung hero who surprised the world in July and August is starting to fall off.  You’re in third, fourth or fifth in your league, but you just need that little extra to get over the hump.  Here are a couple quick tips:

First, now’s not the time to be patient.  If those guys we just talked about are bringing you down, dump them and go with a hot bat or arm.  Second, be cautiously aggressive.  One bad outing by a pitcher, or an 0-fer by a hitter, is not going to harm your average numbers enough to warrant not pulling the trigger, especially in leagues that score beyond the traditional 5×5.  I’m not saying snag any bat or arm in hopes they go off, but if you see a pitcher with a solid match-up or a hitter who’s starting to roll, jump on them!

Here are 10 players who could help you down the stretch (that are most likely still available in your league).

HITTERS

  • Marlon Byrd (OF)  Projection: 72 AB, .319 Avg, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 9 R, 7 2B, 1 SB

On the season, Byrd’s numbers are respectable: .287 Avg, 17 HR, 76 RBI, 59 R, 40 2B, 8 SB.  Over the last week, he’s been on a tear: .542 Avg, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R.  He’ll probably come back to Earth, but if you need outfield help, he is extremely consistent, and his remaining schedule is favorable: vs Sea, vs Oak, vs LAA, @ Oak, vs TB, @LAA, @ Sea.

  • Nick Johnson (1B)  Projection: 65 AB, .353 Avg, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 9 R, 5 2B

Johnson is, simply put, a professional hitter.  He’s not going to give you a power boost, but he’ll give you a slight bump in average, run production and doubles.  He’ll also take a walk or three.  Last week: .429 Avg, 8 RBI, 3 R, 3 2B.  Season (415 AB): .304 Avg, 7 HR, 59 RBI, 60 R, 22 2B.

With Grady Sizemore done for the year, the 22 year-old Brantley is getting a chance to show the Indians what he can do.  His small sample-size (33 AB, .364 Avg, 5 RBI, 5 R, 2 SB) is but a taste of his big-time potential.  The average and RBI production will probably take a dip, but the runs are real and the steals should go up.  2009 Minor League numbers (457 AB): .267 Avg, 6 HR, 37 RBI, 80 R, 46 SB.

  • Alex Gordon (3B)  Projection: 61 AB, .328 Avg, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 13 R, 6 2B, .423 OBP

Gordon has had a rough year.  After missing 3 months with an injury, the Royals sent him back to the Minors to right the ship.  That, he did.  In 104 Minor League at-bats, he posted solid numbers (.327 Avg, .451 OBP, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 22 R, 7 2B).  In the 2 games since his return to KC, he’s already homered, doubled, taken 2 walks and scored 3 runs.  It looks like he’s on track for a good September.

  • Jeff Baker (1B, 2B, 3B)  Projection: 65 AB, .338 Avg, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 11 R, .411 OBP

Since being traded to the Cubs, Baker quietly leads the NL in hitting (43-128, .336 Avg).  He doesn’t do anything spectacularly, but he’s playing everyday and batting in the middle of the order.  Plus, he qualifies at multiple positions in most leagues.

Honorable Mention: Spot start Eric Young Jr., if you need runs and steals.  He’s doesn’t have an everyday job, but if he’s in the Rockies‘ lineup, consider putting him in yours. Projection: 39 AB, .308, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 13 R, 7 SB

PITCHERS

  • Robinson Tejeda Projection: 4 Starts, 25 IP, 2 W, 2.88 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 28 K

With Brian Bannister and Gil Meche probably done for the year, Tejeda will remain in the rotation until season’s end.  His match-ups are just okay (@Det, @CWS, vs. Min, @NYY), but if he pitches anything like he has in his last 2 outings (11.1 IP, 4 hits, 0 R, 4 BB, 14 K vs the Tigers and Angels), he could be a great late-season spot start.

  • Ross Ohlendorf Projection: 5 Starts, 34 IP, 2 W, 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 32 K

Over the past month, Ohlendorf has been solid (27.1 IP, 1 W, 2.30 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 28 K), and he completely shut down Albert Pujols and the Cardinals in his last outing, a no-decision effort (8 IP, 4 hits, 0 R, 1 BB, 11K).  Counting his start today at Houston, he has 5 starts left, including home versus the Padres, at the Cubs, and 2 against the Dodgers (home and away).

  • Wade Davis Projection: 5 Starts, 31 IP, 3 W, 3.48 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 36 K

Davis, the Rays’ top pitching prospect, stymied Detroit in his Major League debut (7 IP, 3 hits, 1 Run, 1 BB, 9 K).  His projection above is slightly skewed, as he faces Boston today and the Yankees in his final start of the season.  In the other 3 he is @ Bal, vs Sea, vs Bal, and he will likely dominate.

  • Brian Duensing Projection: 4 Starts, 26 IP, 2 W, 2.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 21 K

The 26 year-old Duensing has had 4 solid starts in a row for the Twins: 24 IP, 2 W, 2.25 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 20 K.  His final 4 match-ups are not overly scary: vs Oak, vs Det, @ KC, @ Det.  He should keep rolling.

  • Jamie Moyer Projection: 4 Starts, 25 IP, 2 W, 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 18 K

Moyer is starting today against the Mets, and with J.A. Happ nursing an oblique strain and the Phillies on a bit of a decline, the crafty veteran could be in line for some starts as the playoffs near.  Watch the match-ups, but don’t be afraid to use the soft-tossing Moyer, if you’re in need of some W’s down the stretch.
